In my last blog post, I talked about Taylor Swift’s Red album, and how awesome I discovered it was (click here to read it!). Well, my Taylor Swift Red memories and thoughts don’t stop there! There is something I remember from this era that I thought I had to share with all of you, because it’s actually kind of crazy that this happened.
Anyway, on with the story. So when I was a teenager in 2014, my family and I went overseas for the first time, to Singapore and Langkawi in Malaysia. I remember we flew with a budget airline called Air Asia, as I suppose they were the cheapest (This airline is still around now by the way)? When boarding the plane, I remember hearing Taylor Swift music. Like “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “We Are Never Getting Back Together”. Weird, right? That’s what I remember thinking, anyway. And this was consistent with all the flights we took with this airline on that trip.
Well, years later, I have now discovered why they were playing Taylor Swift music.
Air Asia had become a sponsor of Swift’s RED Tour in Asia, and as part of this, had PAINTED A PLANE WITH HER FACE ON IT.
Yes, people. This happened.
Now according to the sources I could find, this plane was used to ferry Taylor and her entourage to her shows in
Jakarta, Manila, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. After being used for this purpose, this aircraft was put into service for a year and did flights with regular paying customers (apparently including flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kalibo and Cebu in the Philippines). Now, imagine flying on a plane with Taylor Swift on it!
You guys probably think I’m weird for even posting about this, but I am so fascinated by this that I just had to share this information. Here’s some more photos, and even a video of them painting the aircraft.
Anyway, this was a weird post for today, but I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless. Let me know if you know of any other musician-themed aircraft liveries!
Have a great day gypsies,
This was a great blast from the past. As a self proclaimed “Swiftie” dating back to Taylor’s self titled debut album, I like to learn things that I didn’t previously know. And, the RED era is by far the era with the least follow up from me. I didn’t do independent research and obsessively seek information like I’ve done with her albums since.
Great job bringing this up and reigniting my desire to fully give Red the recognition it deserves.
(I agree with your other Taylor article that it is one of her most under rated albums. To be fair, I listened to it in real time and think the writing is genius. I’ve always loved Red and felt it showcased the many talents of Taylor, but was overshadowed by her transition (and transformation) away from country. I am also glad that All Too Well has gotten it’s much deserved recognition.
Now we just need to do that for some of her other masterpieces on that album.
